As summer comes to an end, many families are preparing for the transition back to school. While this time of year can bring excitement, it can also bring challenges. After weeks of later bedtimes, vacations, camps, and less structure, getting back into routine can feel difficult for both kids and adults.
As a psychologist and a mom of two, I know firsthand that transitions can be hard. We often expect children to adjust quickly, but the reality is that getting back into routines takes time. The good news is that routine and structure help children feel more secure, confident, and prepared for their day. Consistent routines also support sleep, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
Here are a few simple ways to make the transition easier:
For Parents:

For Kids:
One thing I often remind families is that routines are not about being rigid. They are about providing predictability. When children know what to expect, they are often better able to manage challenges, transitions, and big emotions.

Wishing all families a smooth and successful start to the school year!
